Biographical Sketch of Fr. Bill
Fr. Bill Donovan was raised in Saint Denis Parish, Havertown, PA, the fifth of eight children of the late John and Jean Donovan. All eight children attended St. Denis School, Havertown, and then Archbishop Carroll High School, Radnor. During his early years at St Denis, Fr. Bill was involved in cub scouts, served as an altar server, and played on the school football and track teams.
During his high school years, Fr. Bill was very active, running track, serving on the Student Council including serving as Student Body President. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Mathletes, and National Spanish Honor Society. He graduated with the Honorary Award for General Excellence.
Fr. Bill attended Saint Joseph’s University on a full academic scholarship, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in Philosophy and Accounting. Passing the national examination to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Fr. Bill worked for an international accounting firm before entering Saint Charles Seminary in 1988 to begin his priestly studies.
After graduating from Saint Charles Seminary with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree summa cum laude, Fr. Bill was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in May, 1994, serving first as a parish priest at Saint Joseph’s Parish in Collingdale for three years and then as a high school Religion teacher for one year at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, before being sent for further studies in Rome.
After receiving his Licentiate in Philosophy (Ph.L.) magna cum laude from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and his Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) summa cum laude from the Pontifical University of Santa Croce in Rome, Fr. Bill was assigned to the seminary as a professor. From 2004 to 2013, Fr. Bill served as a professor at Saint Charles Seminary, Wynnewood, and also served as a formator of seminarians and various committees. During his time at the seminary, Fr. Bill served as a weekend assistant at St John Vianney Parish, Gladwyne, PA.
For the past two years, Fr. Bill has served as the Liaison of the Archbishop of Philadelphia to the Pontifical Council for Family at the Vatican. During the past two years, Fr. Bill worked closely with Roman collaborators on many aspects of preparation for the Holy Father’s first trip to the USA and for the World Meeting of Families celebration in Philadelphia.
In January, 2016, Fr. Bill began his new ministry as pastor of Saint Agnes Parish, West Chester.
In addition to his seven brothers and sisters and their respective spouses who all live in the Delaware Valley, Fr. Bill has 19 nieces and nephews and 12 grandnieces and grandnephews.
