Life Works
Mission Statement
Our mission has been given to us by Jesus Christ when he said, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40
Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus is tested about which commandment in the law is the greatest. Jesus replies, “You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
James 2:14-17, James emphasizes the need for a faith that results in charity toward the poor. “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?” Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
The Origin
In May 2006, a group of parishioners, led by the Holy Spirit, traveled to Alabama to assist in the rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Upon returning from this trip these inspired parishioners sought out projects in the St. Agnes community and surrounding areas to lend a helping hand to churches, organizations and individuals in need. The seed planted in 2006 has continually grown through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Growing numbers of parishioners have answered the call to serve others since 2006. We pray that the Holy Spirit continues to guide our parishioners to heed Jesus’ call to serve.
Past Projects
In October 2007, over 300 parishioners volunteered for a two-day Mission Weekend to work on projects located throughout West Chester and surrounding communities and in Philadelphia, PA.
Those who participated in these projects and other activities were truly blessed. The Mission Weekend was without argument very successful, and it continues to gain momentum each year. The Holy Spirit continues to touch and inspire the members of the St. Agnes parish.
Life Works Expands Mission
In 2009, Mission Weekend expanded its scope and became a year-round service organization of St. Agnes. Because of this, Mission Weekend was renamed to LIFE WORKS.
LIFE WORKS is an acronym which means Living In Faith Exemplified Through WORKS. Jesus challenges each of us to live our faith to its fullest by serving others in need.
